New York City teachers, community members, and youth are invited for an interactive day of storytelling, community building, and curriculum development on the localized history of Staten Island’s Asian American community.
Prof. Yuchen Chen will present on their project examining Chinese immigrants and real estate entrepreneurs in West Queens, exploring their placemaking practices in the emerging “new Chinatown.”
Prof. Zai Liang’s presentation focuses on the substantial challenges faced by small businesses in Manhattan Chinatown and the subsequent transitions they have made in the post-Covid pandemic era.
For their project, Jiale Lin, a sophomore at LaGuardia Community College, addresses a critical but often overlooked public health crisis: chronic noise pollution in New York City’s Asian American community hubs.

Chinatown Rising is a doc tracing SF Chinatown’s 1960s-80s activism, told through 16mm footage and voices of young Asian American leaders.
