We invite students, scholars, organizers and artists from all backgrounds to submit proposals that investigate what the recent victory of Zohran Mamdani as mayor reveals about the future of Asian American identity, the intersection of class and race, and the evolving strategies of civic engagement in an increasingly polarized era.
Asian Americans are the fastest-growing group of eligible voters, now making up 6% of the electorate. Yet, 37% remain unaffiliated with any party, giving them potential influence in swing states including Pennsylvania. NBC News’ Vicky Nguyen reports on the issues driving this community.
For many in the local Indian American community, including around 400,000 eligible voters in New York and New Jersey, it has been an uncommon election cycle from the very start.
Jackelyn Mariano will discuss her research and community activism among diasporic Filipino social movements, particularly the Malaya Movement’s broad anti-fascist coalition building during the Philippine elections, and the Justice for Jollibee Workers campaign that has challenged the fast-food corporation’s systemic abuse of workers’ rights.
Prof. Arjun Singh Sethi will discuss his new book, American Hate: Survivors Speak Out (The New Press, August 2018), a moving and timely collection from people impacted by hate speech and crimes before and after the 2016 presidential election.
