AAARI’s fourth issue of CUNY FORUM is concerned with how Asian American Studies, as a radical education initiative begun forty-years ago, can become a “change-creator,” providing a counter narrative to what is already known or practiced. Here, East Coast scholars, activists, artists and institutions, through their work and research bring critical transcultural perspectives and uncommon meanings to both voice and practice.
Obesity is a national epidemic as population studies point to increased trends occurring in Asian Americans. A qualitative study was conducted to identify perceptions of obesity risk and prevention in Chinese American adults residing in the New York metropolitan area. The researchers will discuss social psychological, cultural, and environmental factors that influence obesity risk in Chinese Americans. Insights on nutrition recommendations to prevent obesity will also be presented.
Heart disease is the leading cause of mortality for all Asian/Pacific Islander American groups in the United States.
