This talk addresses the role of community colleges in supporting Asian American students, emphasizing educational access, retention, and success. It explores strategies for creating inclusive academic environments that foster opportunities for growth and achievement within these communities.
Past programs have included an Annual Asian Cultural Performance at the MAC. This performance involved both students and professional performers. It promotes the richness of the Asian Culture through a combination of historical narratives, silk, sword and fan dances. Other activities have included food fairs, martial arts exhibitions, and participation in college wide charity fund raising and inter-club activities.
The Baruch College Asian and Asian American Studies Program and the Asian and Asian American Research Institute at CUNY (AAARI) present a series of new films celebrating Asia and Asian Americans. Sita Sings the Blues, presented courtesy of filmmaker Nina Paley, who will be present for a post-film question and answer.
The Asian American/Asian Research Institute will host a one-day conference on May 16, 2008 titled Asian American Women: Celebrating Successes, Meeting Challenges, a forum where we will examine past, present, and future challenges and objectives for Asian American women.
This talk highlights various challenges and achievements of Asian American women across different fields, from health and education to public administration. Topics include the health needs of Asian women in NYC, barriers to healthcare, and the development of culturally competent genetics education, as well as personal stories of balancing career and family, and navigating identity as Asian American women. Through presentations, attendees gain insight into issues like acculturation, political representation, and the experiences of Asian American women in science and education.
