Building Infrastructure for Asian American/Asian Studies & AAPI Communities across CUNY

The Asian American / Asian Research Institute is delighted to receive a $40,000 grant from the CUNY Black, Race and Ethnic Studies Initiative (BRESI) to support our work. Over the next year, BRESI funding will support AAARI’s work to develop and institutionalize Asian American/Asian Studies (AA/AS) infrastructure at CUNY, as well to foster Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community-building and leadership among CUNY faculty, staff, and students.

Contentious Solidarities: Navigating Racialization and Alliance-Building in Korean American Immigrant Rights Work

Based on ten months of ethnographic fieldwork with Korean American immigrant rights organizers, and the Black and Latinx organizers with which they attempt to build solidarity, this presentation explores how the aforementioned tensions unfold in activists’ daily interactions as they attempt to build an interracial solidarity movement at a moment of intensified anti-immigrant rhetoric and policy-making.

2017 CUNY Conference on Building Coalitions & Coalescing a Pan-Asian/Pacific/American Identity

In the face of such a panoply of identities, forming a pan-Asian/Pacific/American identity has historically proven to be difficult and complicated. AAARI’s conference will explore these challenges and complexities while also identifying and assessing historical instances of successful panethnic coalition building. Ultimately, this conference will provide an intersectional framework and understanding around how APA activists can center frontline leadership and the struggles of the community with which they are standing in solidarity.

Rewards and Challenges in Asian American Community Building

An introduction to the Community Building Initiative (CBI) at Brooklyn College with particular focus on the observations, experiences, and insights gained through our Asian Outreach efforts.
