New York City teachers, community members, and youth are invited for an interactive day of storytelling, community building, and curriculum development on the localized history of The Bronx’s Asian American community.
In this interactive talk, Prof. Gaiutra Bahadur will discuss her book, Coolie Woman: The Odyssey of Indenture (University of Chicago Press, 2013), and dive deep into the processes of creating a living archive, collecting oral stories, and preserving family histories.
How might Kingston be a port of call for the Overseas Chinese? And how might Hong Kong be an important metropolis of the Black diaspora? In this talk, Tao Leigh Goffe examines the intersections of the African and Asian diasporas in a journey from New York to Jamaica to the New Territories in Hong Kong where through the technology of photography and the internet she was reunited with Afro-Jamaican and Chinese family she had never knew existed.
