Job Op – Assistant Director of Community Organizing (The Localized History Project)

The Localized History Project, part of the Asian American / Asian Research Institute – CUNY, is seeking an Assistant Director of Community Organizing who play a pivotal role in creating New York City’s first-ever AAPI History Curriculum! We’re looking for someone passionate about ensuring that all five NYC boroughs are represented, uplifting diverse community voices and histories in this groundbreaking initiative.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lead Outreach & Engagement: Drive outreach and communication with Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) across all five NYC boroughs.
  • Manage Resources: Maintain a comprehensive database of AAPI CBOs and historical exhibits.
  • Facilitate Content Creation: Oversee the successful delivery of 5-10 historical archival exhibits developed by our CBO partners.
  • Cultivate Collaboration: Facilitate monthly meetings with 5-10 advisory board members, including youth, teachers, and professors.
  • Empower Educators: Collaborate with CBOs to plan and facilitate “Localized History Teach-Ins” and community-based professional development sessions for teachers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education, History, Asian American Studies, Community Development, Urban Planning, or a related field.
  • Experience: Proven experience working with CBOs.
  • Skills: Demonstrated experience in research, data collection, data analysis, and research writing.
  • Commitment to Localized History: A deep dedication to the concept of localized history, ensuring that narratives from local AANHPI populations—often overlooked even within broader AANHPI movements—are brought to the forefront.
  • Commitment to Solidarity: A strong belief in histories of solidarity, community, and collectivity, highlighting intersections among communities and drawing connections to other BIPOC communities within the United States.

Working Conditions:

This is a hybrid independent contractor position, primarily based out of the AAARI office in Midtown Manhattan.

  • Commitment: This role requires a significant and consistent commitment of 35-40 hours per week, including occasional evening and weekend hours.
  • Compensation: The annualized rate for this role is $68,000 – $75,000, which will be pro-rated for the anticipated 10-month contract period (September 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026). Please note that this position does not include benefits.
  • Potential for Extension: There’s a possibility for the contract to be extended beyond June 2026.
  • Travel: Some travel is required for conferences, events, and a mandatory Storytelling Retreat from September 26-28, 2025.
