All film or media submissions will be reviewed by our distinguished panel of judges, who will render a decision as to who will take home the top prizes for each category on the night of the festival.

Personal Film

First Prize – The Penny (Running Time: 11 Min.)

Mutsumi Onuma, Media Arts & Communication, City College, CUNY

The Penny is the story of an Asian tourist with a prediliction for picking up pennies off city streets. One day, he encounters a penny in Bryant Park, but is unable to attain it.

Runner-Up Prize – The Theory of Pleasurable Constipation (Running Time: 15 Min.)

Min Kuen Choi, MFA, TV Production, Brooklyn College, CUNY

Theory of the Pleasurable Constipation is the story of a man who is obsessed with the pain of constipation, taking it as a pleasure of his life.

Documentary Film

First Prize – Manthan: The Churning (Running Time: 27 Min.)

Shalini Kantayya, Media Arts Production, City College, CUNY

Manthan: The Churning explores the ideas of faith, scepticism, immortality, inner peace, and religious tolerance within the Indian ceremony of Maha Kumbha Mela (The Festival of Immortality).

Runner-Up – Kaduma (Running Time: 21 Min.)

Alan Raquel, Film, City College, CUNY

Kaduma means companion in a indigenous language of the Philippines. Kaduma is also used in solidarity with the stuggles faced by the indigenous peoples of the Philippines.

Open Competition Film

First Prize – No Light, Big City (Running Time: 6 Min.)

Rioma Kam, Winsie Tow & Juliet Cullen, Immigrant Social Services, Inc.

No Light, Big City takes a light-hearted look at the Blackout of 2003, and reactions from the Chinatown community.

Runner-Up – Learning Chinese: The Story of Ting He (Running Time: 8 Min)

Yan Lin, Seward Park High School

Learning Chinese: The Story of Ting He is the story of a Chinese-American girl who undertakes the difficult task of learning how to read Chinese.
