Viewing Zhang Hongtu’s Bison Painting Series

Above the back of a bison
Flying cranes

Nine hundred seven years ago

Under the exquisite brush of Zhao Ji, Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty

This encounter would have been impossible

Emperor Huizong, taking cranes as an auspicious blessing for his reign, lost his empire,
died captive in a foreign land

Those whom we once knew by their names
All vanished

On Turtle Island, on the North American continent

How many calamities adversities woes had descended in succession

Those who once had no names and vanished
Have all come back again

How many woes adversities calamities had descended
Each moment more despairing than that of massive highway pileups

Than that of skyscrapers mushrooming and rising into the clouds

Heads bowed down, reciting ancient mantras

One can be eliminated

One may not vanish

Digging in like this, enduring like this

Nothing is more ancient than it is, nothing wider than it is, nothing more looming like dark clouds than it is
Where will be the end of woes?

Bison, that mute and persevering existence
Just as a tornado itself, not to be blown away by any force

Like the great earth, like the great earth

(2020.2.16)

Definition of Poetry

In the white terror of
Plague annihilating people door by door
Humans try to recognize their own tiny voices

Reading Camus’ The Plague

Seaside under blazing sunlight
You see dead rats
You see numberless rats
Dying in agony, stained by blood

Humans and rats are similar yet so different

Beyond rats and fearful people
Emotionless
You see the sea and sunlight
Burning and blinding
That dark
Noon

On a shut door you see
Written in capital letters “FREEDOM”

To represent one kind of imprisonment
By another

Only
In confinement

Can one seek liberation

Only in isolation
Is solidarity

“There are more things to admire
In men

Than to despise”

Death that spreads epidemics is always more than quicklime

In the sea
Is solitude

Is friendship

Humans and humans are different yet so similar

(2018.6.25)

Silence

On Angel Island
With my finger
I wrote down in sand
“Those who were silent shall triumph”
