Dr. Catherine Ma is the recipient of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) 2022 Two-Year College Teaching and Mentoring Excellence Award. This new award recognizes the contributions of faculty at two-year institutions in furthering SPSSI’s mission to advance the understanding of social issues.
Dr. Ma, a board member of the Asian American / Asian Research Institute, is the first Chinese full professor of psychology at Kingsborough Community College/CUNY. She earned her Ph.D. in social-personality psychology from the CUNY Graduate Center. She has presented and written extensively on the maternal experiences of breastfeeding, mothering challenges in medicine, critiquing the current breastfeeding paradigm, racial bias in youth sports, the impact of Asian American studies in academia, imposter syndrome, and antiracism pedagogy in the classroom. Her love of research parallels her love of teaching at a racially diverse college because she finds it a privilege to teach students who share similar beginnings.
SPSSI aims to recognize the ways in which faculty at two-year colleges incorporate social issues research into their work, both in and out of the classroom. This award recognizes teaching and/or initiatives at the two-year college level that share applied, social issues research with students and/or surrounding community.
