The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a record rate of job loss for Asian New Yorkers, with unemployment benefit applications increasing by more than 6000% from February to June of 2020.
Many say it’s hard to find accurate and affirming LGBTQ terms in their ancestral languages because existing words are often nonexistent, stereotypical or offensive.
The year 2020 has been a battle for Asian Americans. A battle for their lives in a pandemic. A battle against racial bias and attacks. A battle for respect as essential workers and business owners. Most of all, it has always been a struggle to be seen and heard as Americans.
Civil rights groups argue minorities and others in hard-to-count communities would be missed if the counting ended in September instead of October.
84 percent of recent spelling bee winners came from Indian American families, but director Sujata Day says, “I wanted to depict an Indian family that isn’t out of the box.”
The announcement of the bill’s introduction comes on this day, 42 years ago, when President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the annual celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Week. This week-long celebration was later extended to a month after President George H.W. Bush signed a bill passed by Congress in 1990.
