2010 Welcoming Reception for Dr. Paul Ong
Join AAARI as we welcome our first Thomas Tam Visiting Professor to the City University of New York, Dr. Paul Ong, from University of California, Los Angeles. The Tam Visiting Professor was created in honor of the late Dr. Thomas Tam, CUNY’s first Asian American member of the Board of Trustees, and AAARI’s co-founder and first Executive Director. Dr. Ong will spend the Fall 2010 semester at the CUNY Graduate Center instructing a new Sociology course, Critical Asian American Issues and Actionable Solutions.

This talk is part of a new graduate-level course, Critical Asian American Issues and Actionable Solutions, taught by AAARI’s first CUNY Thomas Tam Visiting Professor, Dr. Paul Ong from UCLA, at the CUNY Graduate Center. For this talk, Corky Lee will exhibit twenty-four of his photographs and discuss their cultural and historical significance to New York City’s Asian American community.

Dubious Gastronomy
This talk focuses on the intersection of academic scholarship and community engagement, with faculty members discussing the role of higher education in addressing social justice issues affecting Asian American communities. It highlights the importance of creating inclusive curricula that reflect the diverse experiences and contributions of these communities.
2010-2011 CUNY Thomas Tam Visiting Professor
Paul Ong is Professor of Urban Planning, Social Welfare and Asian American Studies at the UCLA School of Public Affairs. In Fall 2010 and Fall 2011, Prof. Ong served as the City University of New York’s Thomas Tam Visiting Professor at the CUNY Graduate Center.
Russell C. Leong is the founding editor of the Asian American / Asian Research Institute’s CUNY FORUM publication, and previously served as the CUNY Thomas Tam Visiting Professor at Hunter College/CUNY.
