Over four sessions during the Spring 2023 semester, 15 faculty participants will work on integrating Asian American Studies content into their classes through syllabus revision, assignment re-design, development of modules, and/or drafting new courses in Asian American Studies.
“The Border Within” paints a vivid portrait of these disparate Vietnamese migrants’ encounters with each other in the post-socialist city of Berlin. This book uncovers how 20th-century state formation and international migration—together, border crossings—generate enduring migrant classifications. In doing so, border crossings fracture shared ethnic, national, and religious identities in enduring ways.
Author & illustrator Laura Gao will present on her debut graphic memoir, Messy Roots: A Graphic Memoir of a Wuhanese American. Gao will present her own experiences around the themes of trauma, remembrance, and compassion.
Prof. Francisco Delgado’s current project examines how Chamorro poets reimagine the landscape of California as an extension of their home island. In particular, through a careful reading of works by Chamorro poets like Clarissa Mendiola and Lehua Taitano, both of whom are currently based out of California, he argues that the nature of Chamorro identity and community is as fluid and vast as the Pacific Ocean itself.
Panel speakers will share personal stories about growing up with sewing mothers and grandmothers during the decades when practically every Chinese immigrant family in New York City included garment factory workers – the hard work and long hours, the social environment and friendships, union benefits and programs, and the strength, solidarity and activism of the immigrant women workers. Speakers will discuss how they teach this history and legacy to new generations.
