CUNY Thomas Tam Scholarship 2021 Recipient

Ms. Vikii Wong, a Communications and Media major, is in the early stages of researching on the Stop Asian Hate movement, based on a class paper. Vikii will gather qualitative and quantitative data on the status of Asian hate crimes, including the recent spa shootings in Atlanta, Georgia on March 16, 2021. She plans to raise awareness by learning about the current state of Asian hate in the United States, and perhaps Canada—as Vancouver has a large Asian population.

2021 CUNY Asian American Film Festival

The CUNY AAFF helps to promote the artistic visual talents and stimulate communication among CUNY students who are separated by the different campuses, and serve as a central location to display their creative works. Past participants have also had their films screened at the Asian American International Film Festival.

2021 Betty Lee Sung Research Endowment Fund

Betty Lee Sung, co-founder of the Asian American / Asian Research Institute (AAARI), Professor Emerita, City College of New York, and recipient of the 2017 Association for Asian American Studies Lifetime Achievement Award, has established an endowment of $100,000 at the City University of New York to create a research fund under the auspices of AAARI, on Asian American topics. The fund is intended to support the research by providing funds for a research assistant, copywriter, research travel, acquisition or access to research material and similar costs so that the researcher can complete the project.

2020 Dr. K. York & M. Noelle Chynn CUNY Ethics and Morality Essay Contest

The CUNY Ethics and Morality Essay Contest is funded by an endowment gift of $100,000 to the City University of New York by Dr. K. York Chynn and his wife Noelle Chynn. This annual award is intended to promote and stimulate thinking by college students at CUNY about the topic of ethics, morality, and virtuous behavior in their lives.

CUNY Thomas Tam Scholarship 2020 Recipient

Ms. Gina Gao, a Hospitality Management major at New York City College of Technology, was an intern and employee at Turnstile Tours, hosting tours and virtual programs across New York City. Before arriving to the United States in 2012, Gina obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management from Hubei University in China, and worked for seven years as a tour guide and itinerary planner. Due to the downturn of the tourism industry in 2020, Gina shifted careers and became a New York City police officer in order to serve the community.
