As we mark one year since the tragic Atlanta spa shootings and two years since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, the Asian American Journalists Association has updated their guidance on coverage of violence against Asian Americans based on input from AAJA’s Media Watch, Broadcast Advisory Council, and AAJJ membership at-large.

The long-awaited findings came from a follow-up survey the bureau conducted to measure the accuracy of the latest head count of people living in the U.S., which is used to redistribute political representation and federal funding across the country for the next 10 years.

Most incidents reportedly occurred in places such as streets, businesses, parks and subways.

In this release, advance findings from needs assessment which examined the impact of the pandemic on the NYC Asian American community. Three key areas are highlighted: COVID–19 vaccination, food hardships and access to food, and language access.
