Thao, a 37-year-old domestic violence survivor and the daughter of refugees, is the first Hmong American mayor to lead a major city in the United States.

Yao Pan Ma, 61, suffered a traumatic brain injury from the 2021 attack and never regained consciousness. He died eight months later from his injuries.
The suspect told police she stabbed the victim because the victim was “Chinese,” adding that it “would be one less person to blow up our country,” according to an affidavit shared with NPR.
