The Asian American / Asian Research Institute is excited to announce the permanent appointment of Dr. John J. Chin as Dean of the Institute. Dr. Chin has served as interim dean of AAARI since September 2024. He will oversee day-to-day operations and provide strategic vision to advance AAARI’s mission of facilitating research and scholarship on issues relevant to Asia, Asian America, and other Asian diasporas. His leadership will be instrumental in ensuring AAARI’s continued growth as a premier institute of its kind.
Dean Chin’s appointment comes at a critical time, as AAARI works to support the implementation of the new Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) history curriculum in New York City schools. Queens College President Frank H. Wu praised Dr. Chin’s extensive experience, particularly in the areas of immigrant-led community advocacy and public policy, which will be vital to the Institute’s mission. Under his guidance, AAARI aims to strengthen its ties to diverse communities, expand its research profile, and serve as a crucial bridge between CUNY and the Asian American / Asian communities in New York City and beyond.
