Accepting Applications for 2025-2026 Youth Researcher (The Localized History Project)

Are you a passionate NYC high school or college student ready to make history? The Localized History Project, part of the Asian American / Asian Research Institute – CUNY, is seeking Youth Researchers to drive the creation of the first-ever Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) History Curriculum for New York City Public Schools! This is a unique opportunity to shape education and ensure AAPI history is told.

Youth researchers will receive a stipend after each semester of project completion.

Your Role & Responsibilities:

  • Attend mandatory meetings for the 2025-2026 school year:
    • Wednesdays: 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM (on Zoom)
    • One Saturday per month: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM (in-person, dates TBD)
  • Create a localized history exhibit focusing on AAPI NYC History.
  • Partner with a teacher cohort to develop and refine individual projects, and create a Teachers Guide for exhibit implementation in classrooms.
  • Showcase your work by attending select events and presentations.
  • Conduct research on the state of AAPI history in NYC and the lived experiences of AAPI youth.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current NYC Public School High School or College Student.
  • Passionate about learning, advocating for, and uncovering AAPI history.
  • Possesses historical research and writing skills, and most importantly, a love of history.

Working Conditions & Benefits:

  • Youth will receive a stipend of $20/hour, paid twice a year.
  • Meetings are primarily on Zoom, with one in-person meeting per month in Midtown Manhattan.
  • We highly recommend participants attend our Storytelling Retreat from September 26-28th, 2025 (an all-expenses-paid trip upstate).
  • Opportunities to travel to conferences (all expenses paid) to showcase your work and research.
