Job Op – 2023 Medical Interpreter, English – Mandarin (Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center)

The Immigrant Health and Cancer Disparities Center (IHCD) at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is looking for bilingual English-Chinese-speaking (Mandarin) candidates who are passionate about helping immigrants and underserved populations access health care in a manner that is responsive to their cultural and linguistic needs. We are looking for candidates with demonstrable native-level fluency in English and Mandarin. Successful individuals will serve as consecutive/simultaneous medical interpreters in a series of provider-patient psychotherapy sessions. Successful candidates will interpret for English-speaking therapists and Mandarin-speaking patients using the Remote Simultaneous Medical Interpreting (RSMI) model. This is a specialized paid training opportunity that will include medical interpreting training and receipt of a program certificate.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Attend 80 hours of in-person medical interpreting training provided by IHCD. Individuals will receive a Program Certificate upon successful completion of the training and will be eligible for national certification in medical interpreting.
  • Provide a minimum of 3 hours/week of remote interpreting beginning March 2023, with the possibility to add more hours as cases arise
    Language Prerequisite Requirements:
  • All applicants must demonstrate their native-level fluency in both languages by participating in a bilingual interview conducted in English and Mandarin

Date: Approx. May 2023-ongoing (minimum 1 year commitment)
Location: Remote (study to be conducted via Zoom)
Hours: Approx. 90 hours
Rate: $30 per hour. Interpreters will also be compensated an additional $50 for participating in a post-study interview about their experience interpreting.
