The following Asian American Studies courses will be available at Brooklyn College during the Spring 2023 semester. Non-Brooklyn College students at CUNY are encouraged to enroll via e-permit.   • AMST 3142: Asian American and Pacific Islander Experiences through Literature. TTh 2:15-3:30pm, ONLINE SYNCHRONOUS, Professor Cherry Lou Sy

    This course considers Asian American texts as a form of cultural representation concerned with the following questions: 1) Where is Asian America? What are its geographical and social boundaries, if any?; and 2) What is Asian America? The course also explores three types of narratives: immigration narratives, narratives of second-generation identity construction, and narratives emphasizing global or postcolonial perspectives. Prerequisites: English 1010; or the Permission of the Program Director.

  • AMST 3143: Asian American and Pacific Islander Activism and Community. MW 2:15-3:30pm, ONLINE SYNCHRONOUS, Professor Alexander Ho

    Asian American and Pacific Islanders have a long history of activism in the United States. This class examines the historical social movements, such as the Asian American Movement during the Civil Rights era, and the contributions of instrumental figures, such as Yuri Kochiyama, Grace Lee Boggs, and Richard Aoki. Other topics will include activism surrounding Black civil rights, farm laborer rights, Hawai’ian sovereignty, post 9-11 Islamophobia, the murder of Vincent Chin, and the surge in anti-AAPI violence during the COVID-19 pandemic, among other topics. These events are shaped by broader American socio-politics, but also speak to American values and traditions.

  • AMST 3904: Specia Topics in American Studies: Asia in the Caribbean. MW 12:50-2:05pm, in person, Professor Aleah Ranjitsingh

    Asian presence in the Caribbean. Critical survey of the history, role, image and contributions of Asian people to the formation of Caribbean identity. Examination of indentureship, slavery, case studies of Asian descendants. Asian Caribbean contributions to art and culture, politics, social relations. The economic relations between Asia and the Caribbean.
