Nazrul Khandaker Selected to Represent International Section at China 2013 Meeting

Nazrul Khandaker, Professor of Geology at York College/CUNY, was selected to be one of the key International Section Management Board (ISMB) members to represent the Geological Society of America (GSA) at the forthcoming international meeting “Roof of the World”, to be held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. The China meeting is a joint meeting of the Geological Society of China (GSC) and the Geological Society of America (GSA) and final preparation is underway to welcome overseas participants in Chengdu in June 16-19, 2013. It is brought together by the GSA International Section. As an ISMB board member and secretary, Prof. Khandaker was closely involved in terms of proposing scientific sessions, initiating a memorandum of agreement in 2011 with Chinese counterpart, organizing technical sessions, and other logistical matters. Approximately 500 participants from China and overseas countries are expected to attend this important geological meeting. Currently Prof. Khandaker is also leading a session titled “Foreland basin tectonics and sedimentation (north of the Tibetan Plateau).”

Conveners: KHANDAKER Nazrul I., JIA Chengzhao (CNPC), LI Haibing (CAGS)

Foreland basins document active tectonism and provide significant constraints on depositional environments and resultant rock record. The Cenozoic geologic history of Tibet and surrounding regions is largely affected by complex plate-tectonic phenomena and many of these complex phenomena can be fingerprinted and explained by a combination of field, isotopic, and paleontological investigations.
