2025 Summer Internship – Civil Rights, Health Education & LGBTQ History Book Projects (Glenn Magpantay)

Glenn D. Magpantay, a long-time civil rights attorney, Professor of Law and Asian American Studies, Principal at Magpantay & Associates, a nonprofit consulting and legal services firm, and United States Commissioner for Civil Rights seeks undergraduate, law and post-graduate  students for internships with his firm.

PROJECTS INCLUDE:

1. Commission on Civil Rights
In 2023, the U.S. Senate (majority) appointed Glenn D. Magpantay to the United States Commission for Civil Rights. The Commission is an independent, bipartisan agency responsible for investigating, reporting, and advising the President and Congress on civil rights enforcement and the development of  civil rights policy.

  • Conduct research and analysis on emerging civil rights issues such as rights of Americans in the territories and language access. 
  • Assist with the preparation of reports, memos, and briefings.
  • Support public outreach and communications efforts.
  • Advocate for greater language access by state and local law enforcement and victim services, as recommended by the Commission in The Federal Response to Anti-Asian Racism in the United States in 2023.
  • Correspond with staff of United States Senators and lobby for full-funding for the Commission’s $15 Million budget.

2. Public Health Education & Advocacy
Magpantay & Associates’ major client is the Apicha Community Health Center, formerly the Asian Pacific Islander Coalition on HIV/AIDS.  Client services include assisting in:

  • State and municipal governmental relations and advocacy for increased health care and AIDS/HIV funding
  • Communications to promote health care services such as primary care, dentistry, pediatrics, gender-affirming care, pharmacy, STI/HIV/AIDS testing and prevention, focusing on LGBTQ people, immigrants, and the poor. 
  • Identify and cultivate strategic partnerships with other health care agencies and community-based organizations.
  • Applicants familiar with scientific research tables will assist in developing a study on the health and wellness needs of LGBTQ Asian Pacific Islanders into a publishable scientific academic article.

3. History Book on LGBTQ Asian American Activism
Glenn is researching and writing a book on the history/ herstory/ their-story of LGBTQ Asian Americans/ South Asians to build community and movement for social change in the United States over the past 25 years.  The acclaimed poet Maya Angelou once said, “If you don’t know where you’ve been, you can’t know where you’re going.” There is a dearth of resources that chronicles the history, struggles, and successes of LGBTQ Asians.  This project includes:

  • background research and fact-checking
  • writing and proofreading

4. Other Responsibilities 

  • Communications: Website development, writing, social media  
  • Assist in organizing LGBTQ Asian American bar association educational events (CLE).

SKILLS LEARNED & SUPERVISION

  • Students develop their research and writing skills; project management; event planning and execution; and legal advocacy.
  • Supervision will include an initial orientation, weekly, or bi-weekly, supervision meetings to go over progress, issues, and further guidance.

ABOUT SUPERVISOR
For over 30 years, Glenn D. Magpantay has been an impactful civil rights attorney, beloved professor, and fierce LGBTQ rights activist.  In 2023, the United States Senate appointed Glenn to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights to advise Congress and The White House on the enforcement of civil rights laws and develop national civil rights policy.  He co-founded and served as Executive Director of the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA). Before he was a nationally recognized civil rights attorney at the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF).  

He is a thought-leader having brought 15 briefs to the United States Supreme Court; testified before the United States Congress; published 20 scholarly legal and academic articles; authored impactful public reports; and has given commentary to The New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Associated Press, MSNBC-TV, NBC Asian America, and The Advocate.  He has mentored countless students, young professionals, lawyers, and nonprofit practitioners.  www.linkedin.com/in/glenn-d-magpantay-esq

REQUIREMENTS
This internship is not a paid position, but students can arrange for academic credit, scholarships or summer intern stipends from various academic programs.  This summer 2025 internship is remote and part-time.  Interns are expected to work between 12 to 20 hours per week.  Many tasks can be done in the evenings and weekends.
