CUNY Thomas Tam Scholarship 2015 Recipient

Lauren Chai (Baruch College)
Project: Domestic Violence in the Asian Community

Ms. Lauren Chai is an undergraduate student majoring in Marketing at Baruch College/CUNY. The goal of Ms. Chai’s project, Domestic Violence in the Asian Community, is to spread awareness about the problem of domestic violence against Asian women. Ms. Chai plans to create a partnership with Asian organizations and domestic violence groups to hold workshops in schools and in the community. The workshops will invite speakers who are themselves past victims of domestic violence to share their stories about overcoming the difficult times. The workshops will take place at least once a week in order for victims to have someone and place to turn to when they feel helpless.

In addition to the weekly workshops, Ms. Chai plans to partner with Verizon’s HopeLine program, which donates used cell phones to victims of domestic violence. During Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, she plans to disseminate information about this issue in order to educate the general public.
