Raising Money to Tell Our Stories

Asian American Women Media Makers

Raising Money to Tell Our Stories

Date: Friday, April 19, 2013

Time: 6PM to 8PM

Place: 25 West 43rd Street, 18th Floor
between 5th & 6th Avenues, Manhattan

Asian American Women Media Makers is a working group founded by a few filmmakers in the spring of 2012. What started out as a monthly brunch for networking and support to tell our stories in media has expanded into an ongoing conversation to address the issues of underrepresentation and underemployment of our community in mainstream media, and to find ways to empower ourselves as content creators.

Our first public event is a conversation on Raising Money to Tell Our Stories. While the competition for funding is tough for most filmmakers, are there added challenges for Asian American women filmmakers? Do we tell stories that are perceived to have a small commercial market? Do we ask for money effectively? What are the unique challenges we face as a community? How can we successfully fund our projects when we don’t know anyone in the business?

We have assembled a panel of experts who have given away money and people who have successfully asked for money – to tell our stories in media:

  • Kyung Yoon – Executive Director, Korean American Community Fund
  • Kay Takeda – Director of Grants and Services, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council
  • Angie Wang – Asian Women Giving Circle & Outreach Director, War & Peace
  • Mynette Louie – Producer, Syncopated Films
  • JT Takagi – Independent Filmmaker & Business Manager, Third World Newsreel
