Every year, thousands of undocumented youth who graduate from New York high schools face an uncertain future because of their immigration status. With federal legislation perpetually stalled in Congress, many states are taking the Dream Act into their own hands, passing legislation to provide in-state tuition and reduce other funding barriers so that undocumented immigrants can attend college.
The New York DREAM Act seeks to expand the access that undocumented students have to higher education. It would support the extension of the state’s Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and other scholarships to all students, regardless of immigration status. It would also create a commission to raise private funds for all children of immigrants, and allow undocumented students and their families to open up college savings accounts.
What are the prospects and the implications of this legislation?
This event is for everyone who wants to learn more about the NY DREAM Act, its potential impact on ALL New Yorkers, including undocumented students, its costs/benefits, and the campaign to get it passed this year.
