NYC Tanabata Festival

Jul/13/2024 at 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Join us for the 8th Annual NYC Tanabata Festival on Saturday eve, June 13th! Learn about the folk legend of two star-crossed lovers behind this Japanese summertime tradition which features writing paper wishes to hang on branches, and viewing the stars with telescopes!

The story revolves around the deities Princess Orihime, a weaver, and her lover, Hikoboshi, a cowboy, represented by the stars Vega and Altair, which are prominent in the summer sky.

The New York Mixed Chorus will start off the program at 6:30pm with beautiful, star-themed songs; the Origami Therapy Association will be teaching origami and how to write tanzaku; Bon-Dan NYC will be leading a group Japanese traditional dance, and Consul Sato will be telling the story of #Tanabata with kamishibai, old-fashioned story boards!

Come in #yukata or #cosplay to this family-friendly community event on the UES, and bring your own #bento!
