Marriage Equality and LGBTQ Rights in Taiwan
Apr 3 at 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
To shed light on historic developments in LGBTQ rights movement building in Taiwan, the first Asian country to pass marriage equality in its constitution in 2019, documentary filmmaker and assistant professor Larry Tung will be showing his documentary short “Taiwan! Let’s Get Married!” (2018) and three other works, “A Big Fat Taiwanese Wedding Banquet” (2019) covering the traditional Taiwan outdoor banquet celebrating marriage equality in front of the presidential office, and “My Queer Bookstore” (2009) covering a historic Taipei LGBTQ bookstore, and “Pride Around the World” (2020) a segment on how Taiwan’s Pride march during the 2020 pandemic came to represent pride around the world. Professor Tung will speak in a moderated Q&A session with substitute instructor Alex Ho to share knowledge with the BMCC community about LGBTQ issues in Taiwan.
This Event is open to all CUNY Students to attend. It is made possible by the CUNY LGBTQIA+ Consortium, the BMCC Asian Heritage Month Planning Committee, and the Department of Ethnic and Race Studies. For inquiries on the event, contact substitute professor Alex Ho at aho@bmcc.cuny.edu.
