Growing Up Financially in Asian Immigrant Families

May 9 at 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

For Baruch alumni who come from Asian immigrant families, there is often a common challenge: you have to learn Financial Literacy on your own. Parents typically do not teach it to you since, due to language and cultural differences, there is a lack of knowledge about what tools are available. Topics such as stock market investment and retirement fund management seldom find a place at the family dining table. Moreover, many immigrants and first-generation Americans arrive in the country under challenging financial circumstances, feeling a duty to provide support to friends and relatives in their countries of origin. This sense of obligation extends to their offspring, with parents often expecting children to support their retirement.

In this panel discussion, hear from Baruch alumni who come from this type of background, as they discuss how to rise up to the challenges of learning financial literacy in families with a completely different cultural view on finance and savings.
