Changing the Narrative: AAPIs in North Carolina
The Asian American Education Project is proud to host “Changing the Narrative: AAPIs in North Carolina,” an in-person professional development program focused on the teaching of Asian American and Pacific Islander histories and experiences in the K-12 classroom. In this one-day institute, we will explore some narratives that exist about Asian Americans in North Carolina (and in the U.S. South-at-large) and the role that K-12 education plays in changing, breaking, complicating, or adding to those narratives. Through interactive workshops, participants will acquire strategies and lessons for teaching about AAPI communities in the US South, dive into specific AAPI histories in North Carolina, and discuss how North Carolina’s HB835 Learning AAPI Contributions in Schools can impact their teaching.
Participant Qualifications
All K-12 educators are welcome to apply. Priority will be given to teachers based in North Carolina. No prior knowledge of Asian American studies is needed.
