Asian Americans & the Fight for Education: Featuring Author Marie Chan

May 14 at 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

In 1885, eight-year-old Mamie Tape was denied enrollment in a San Francisco public school solely because of her Chinese heritage — and her family fought back. This workshop centers the landmark case of Tape v. Hurley and the extraordinary Tape family, featuring special guest Marie Chan, author of Mamie Takes a Stand. Participants will explore the historical context of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, engage with primary sources, and hear directly from Marie Chan about the Tape family’s story and legacy. The workshop also traces how Tape v. Hurley connects to other pivotal education equity cases. Educators will leave with ready-to-use AAEdu lesson plans and resources.
