Asian American Forum (“AAF”) radio program reunion panel

We’d like to tell you why the Asian American Forum radio program exists — and why this reunion matters.

On December 3, 1987, eight Asian American students at the University of Connecticut were racially attacked. What followed was 18 months of student-led activism that produced the UConn Asian American Cultural Center, the Asian American Studies Institute — and a radio program. Dr. Paul Bock and Mrs. Phoebe Ten Yin Ho Bock created the Asian American Forum on WWUH 91.3 FM, (arguably) the first Asian American college radio program on the East Coast, as a direct response to what those students had endured and demanded. That radio program ran every Wednesday from 1990 to 1996, producing over 300 episodes.

University of Connecticut (UConn) Library has now digitized and preserved over 200 episodes recovered from audio cassette tapes. Over 300 voices.

On Thursday, August 13 at 7:00 PM ET / 4:00 PM PT, we invite you to a virtual reunion panel — hosted by Wing Luke Museum — where the history comes full circle.

Our panelists include Ronald Cheung, one of the students involved in the Dec. 3, 1987 racist incident; Prof. Renee Tajima-Peña, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker and chronicler of the Asian American experience; Dr. Judy W. Yu, educator and co-founder of the Black and Asian Solidarity Collective; and Grace A. Lou, Esq., attorney and advocate for community legacy. (Both Judy & Grace appeared on multiple episodes of the AAF!)

Moderated by Edward Junhao Lim, former Business & Entrepreneurship Librarian at UConn Library, and founding project lead for the AAF digitization project.
