A celebration and acknowledgement of the myriad of ways Asian Americans express themselves through sports and sporting behaviors.  This session takes a look at Asian America’s complex relationships to american sports cultures. Do Asian Americans identify american sports culture as an ecosystem to promote social justice, and what do we accept as the benefits of participation? Further, should we view historical events as assimilative efforts, fierce acts of belonging, or powerful pathways to shift the decision-making of who gets to play? For Asian Americans, sports cultures have never been simply for the love of games. Or have they?

This workshop will interrogate participants’ own formed relationships to sports, investigating the personal identity formation in relation to broader societal expectations and norms as defined by dominant culture practice and the binary of black and white racial constructs.

Our instructor, Carolyn A. Sideco (She / Coach / Siya), aka Coach Sideco, is an immigrant to Turtle Island, whole Pinay 24/7, lover of Filipina/x/o community spaces, and witness to, amplifier of, and practitioner of fierce community positivity in the midst of continual grieving and emergence.
