Episode 02: Iris and Gerry Miyoshi and Vickie Sakurada Schaepler with Jason Richter
This episode is in two parts. In the first half, Jason Richter interviewed Iris and Gerry Miyoshi. The Miyoshi’s are Japanese-Americans, born and raised in Colorado, where Jason is from. Most of Iris’ father’s side of the family lost their farms in California and were placed in a Japanese internment camp in Poston, Arizona during World War II. In the episode, they discuss what it was like growing up in Colorado, the large Japanese-American population in Colorado because of the then Governor’s refusal to inter his citizens, and the importance of AAPI studies.
For the second half of the episode, Jason interviewed Vickie Sakurada Schaepler, the coordinator of the Japanese Hall and History Project at Legacy of the Plains Museum at Gering, NE. Vickie detailed the work they are doing to preserve the Japanese Hall as well as a detailed history of her family’s immigration to the United States as well as a macro view of the history of Japanese-Americans from first immigration to the present day. Vickie talks about Hiram Kano lifelong friend of William Jennings Bryan, John Okada author of “No-No Boy,” and Ben Kuroki subject of the documentary “Most Honorable Son” and how they are all linked to Japanese-American heritage and the state of Nebraska.
