Our Stories Are Strength: A Conversation with Ly Tran, Hunter Alum and Author of House of Sticks, A Memoir
Ly Tran was a toddler when she and her family immigrated from a small town along the Mekong river in Vietnam to a two-bedroom railroad apartment in Queens. She grew up in NYC, sewing ties and cummerbunds on the living room floor with her parents and three brothers to make ends meet. Despite many challenges, Ly excelled in NYC public schools, entered Hunter’s Macaulay Honors College, and earned a 4.0 GPA in her first semester. After this, her life took a downward turn and she dropped out. While she wrote in her memoir, House of Sticks, that she left Hunter, “never to return again.” She’s back to share her powerful story with our students.
Ly’s life story is full of resilience, self-discovery, and love. At this event, students and faculty will hear more of Tran’s story while also learning more about one another. All are welcome! You do not need to have read the book to join.
