Re-Generations and Re-Tellings: Fifty Years after the Fall of Sài Gòn
This special edition of CUNY FORUM: Asian American / Asian Studies marks fifty years after the Fall of Sài Gòn in 1975, and the subsequent globalized diaspora of Vietnamese and Southeast Asian peoples.

With a focus on the United States, this edition moves from the devastation of war and refugee resettlement to re-generate views from within communities and to re-tell our stories across generations through literature and memoir, culture and film, journalism and social analysis. As refugees who are also transcendent subjects of our histories, we shape and design diasporic destinations through diverse philosophies and practices, we seek to:
- Chronicle fifty years of forging generational connections among old, young, and the yet unborn
- Weave and re-tell family and community stories
- Assess how experiences and perspectives of Vietnamese, Cambodian, Hmong, and others are being taught in Asian American Studies programs on the East and West coasts.
- Provide hope and create new critical alliances among native-born, refugees, and native peoples in the mainland United States, the Pacific, and the Near and Middle East.
- Provide primary teaching materials for further and future studies through our print and online edition.
Yến Lê Espiritu, the renowned scholar of Vietnamese and refugee studies, in the lead essay, provides an insightful account of a personal and academic journey “born from war but also from beauty, and told on the run…” which links the journey of the Vietnamese refugees with the neo-colonial status of the peoples of Guam, the Pacific, and other nations struggling through war and refugee displacements.
