Play With Stress: Comics for Mindfulness

Nov/30/2023 at 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Drawing is a deep way of being present. “Play With Stress: Comics for Mindfulness” is part of a series of workshops and events that focus on mental health in Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, sponsored by the Queens College AANAPISI Project (QCAP).

Join us on Thursday, November 30, at 12:00pm, for the next QCAP Mental Health Workshop, where award-winning artist/cartoonist Yao Xiao will use interactive drawing exercises as new ways to practice mindfulness. This workshop will help you get creative during times of stress.

With these creative exercises, we learn why drawing is a useful tool to navigate environmental stressors, how drawing our emotions and feelings help with processing complicated life experiences. As a queer first-generation immigrant, Yao Xiao teaches how to use simple drawings as a powerful tool for affirmation and empowerment.

Drawing together is a powerful way to deeply engage in non-verbal communication. Through exercises and activities drawn from a cartoonist’s tool box, you not only can point to your creation and show others, “this is how I feel!” but also see your thoughts organized in a way for you to access in a calm environment.

Drawing experience is not required for attending the workshop. All skill levels are welcome!

Snacks will be provided!

Masks are encouraged but not required. Visitors to Queens College may be required to present a valid state-issued ID for campus access. See the Queens College website for directions and a campus map.
