Forgotten History of Chinese in New York Tour

Oct/21/2023 at 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

Learn the little-known history of Chinatown, with a focus on the social, economic, and cultural life of the community. Moving through the historic core of the neighborhood, the tour highlights people and businesses that captured the public imagination. Learn about Sgt. Lau Sing Kee, who was awarded a Purple Heart and a Croix de Guerre from France for extraordinary courage in WWI, and hear how a Broadway song about Chinatown became a national hit. The tour ends on Doyers Street at the site of the Chinese Theater, which, though owned by a Chinese businessman, often excluded Chinese people from attendance. Get a more holistic appreciation of New York’s Chinese community and its sizable impact on and contribution to the city and country.
