AN ACT OF WORSHIP is a polyphonic portrait of the last 30 years of Muslim life in America, told through the lens of Muslims living in the United States. It documents the shifts in public perception and government policy while also showing how Muslims in America are fighting back against Islamophobia and discriminatory policies.

Join Third World Newsreel and the Documentary Forum at CCNY to see this counter-narrative of pivotal moments in U.S. history and to explore the impact of anti-Muslim rhetoric and policy on young Muslims who came of age after 9/11, and then hear from the director and cinematographer, Nausheen Dadabhoy, who made this film while simultaneously being a high in demand camerawoman of documentaries.

AN ACT OF WORSHIP premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2022 and aired on PBS in October on the POV series.

Nausheen Dadabhoy, is a cinematographer and director whose work spans fiction and documentary. As a cinematographer she has lensed an Oscar nominated live action short film and an Emmy winning feature documentary. Her films have screened at festivals worldwide including Sundance, TIFF, AFI Fest, Locarno and have appeared on Netflix, Hulu, HBO and Disney +. THE GROUND BENEATH THEIR FEET — her directorial debut following two Pakistani women who were paralyzed after an earthquake — premiered at IDFA in the first appearance competition. Her second feature, AN ACT OF WORSHIP, recounts the last 30 years of Muslim-American history through the collective memory of the community. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, and broadcast on POV. Nausheen has been a Film Independent Project:Involve Fellow, Berlin Talents Participant, Firelight Fellow, Chicken & Egg Eggcelerator Lab Fellow, newportFILM Documentary Cinematography Fellow, DOCNYC’s 40 Under 40, and a Soros Equality Fellow. She is part of the inaugural cohort of the Pillars Artist Fellowship, which is supported by Riz Ahmed’s LeftHanded Films. She is also a founding member of the Documentary Cinematographers Alliance. Nausheen is based in NYC, LA and Karachi, Pakistan. She received her MFA in Cinematography from the American Film Institute.
