Lost and Found in Translation

Established in 1945, the United Nations is comprised of 191 countries committed to the preservation of peace through international cooperation and collective security. As members of the world meet one another to discuss international policies, and conflict resolutions, language has become crucial commodity in today’s globalized society.

Mr. Hung Jung Lee will share his experiences as an all-purpose translator for the United Nations’ Translation Division, and discuss the challenges faced by those in his profession, as monumental decisions become lost and found in translation.

Author Bio

Hung Jung Lee is Senior Translator and Programming Officer of the United Nation's Chinese Translation Service. Attended primary school in China; secondary school in Hong Kong. Obtained B.S. in chemistry from University of California, Berkeley. Pursued graduate studies in molecular biology at California Institute of Technology. Joined the United Nations as translator (primarily English to Chinese) in 1974.
