SUMMARY:Screening - Invisible No More
DESCRIPTION:Screening of the documentary “Invisible No More\,”co-produced by Larry Tung & Mehrunnisa Wani. \nAsian Americans are no longer just an emerging force in New York City politics—they are making decisive gains at every level of government. The rise in Asian American representation is unmistakable\, with their growing political strength on full display\, particularly in Brooklyn’s newly designated Asian opportunity district. Established in 2023 through the once-a-decade redistricting process\, the district reflects the rapid growth and increasing influence of the Asian American community. City Councilmembers Linda Lee\, Sandra Ung\, and Susan Zhuang\, alongside State Senator John Liu and former State Senator Iwen Chu\, share their paths to public service—how they broke barriers\, claimed seats at the table\, and now amplify the voices of their communities.

SUMMARY:The Living Library: An Evening of Indian Classical Music & Dance
DESCRIPTION:An evening born from the idea that the great works of literature were never meant to stay static on the shelves\, the Living Library brings classic works of Indian literature onto the stage at Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library to kick off the 2026 World Literature and Arts Festival. Join us as we reimagine stories and verses through a dialogue between two of India’s profound classical dance traditions. \nKathak dancer Neeharika Tummala brings the story driven art of Kathak to NYPL\, with her performance capturing fast footwork balanced by subtle\, conversational nuances that define the North Indian tradition\, turning literary metaphors into rhythmic reality. Author Nandana Dev Sen will recite her poetry as Neeharika translates them to dance. In a contrasting performance\, Bharatanatyam dancer Sloka Iyengar presents the grounded\, sculptural power of her dance form which is rooted in South Indian tradition. With its sharp geometry and emotional expressions\, Iyengar’s interpretation will translate the spiritual depth of the literature into a visual language.

SUMMARY:“Elevating AAPI Voices: Storytelling for Advocacy” Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Policy advocacy can be daunting\, and the language and data of the policy world can feel removed from your everyday community work. Storytelling is a powerful tool to give voices to our community while putting the humanity back into our public discourse. \nAJSOCAL will host this workshop on April 16 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM via Zoom to share storytelling strategies\, such as story arcs and asset framing\, that can help you craft compelling messages. \nThe session will be led by Eric C. Wat. He is an award-winning author of four books\, including Love Your Asian Body\, winner of the 2023 AAAS Outstanding Book in History\, and a longtime activist and consultant whose work spans community organizing\, research and evaluation\, planning\, facilitation\, and coaching\, with ongoing advocacy in trans rights\, land rematriation\, and immigrant labor.   \nA previous participant of Eric’s storytelling workshop shared: “We always knew that storytelling was important to provide a realistic picture to policymakers and funders\, but there was never an opportunity to really think about how to do it effectively. It was a very resourceful session.” \nWe encourage you to share this workshop with your network of navigators and advocates. If you are planning on attending\, please REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Film - Another Gaze Presents Suzaki Paradise: Red Light
DESCRIPTION:70th Anniversary—Introduction by Moeko Fujii. Destitute and down to a pocketful of change\, a young couple arrives at the outskirts of the riverfront pleasure district of Suzaki Paradise shortly before the enactment of Japan’s anti-prostitution laws. Tsutae\, a former prostitute\, installs herself at the nearby Bar Chigusa\, an outpost on the bounds of the district’s undefined expanse\, while dour-faced Yoshiji toils away as a soba deliveryman. Based on Yoshiko Shibaki’s eponymous collection of stories (also the source material for Mizoguchi’s Street of Shame) and adapted by proto-New Wave filmmaker Yuzo Kawashima\, Susaki Paradise: Red Light remains a crucial work of postwar cinema\, its feverish undercurrent of desperation swelling as opportunism\, love\, desire and dreams collide over the shimmering waterways of Suzaki. \nDir. Yuzo Kawashima\, 1956\, 81 min. DCP\, b&w\, in Japanese with English subtitles. With Michiyo Aratama\, Yukiko Todoroki\, Tatsuya Mihashi.

SUMMARY:Democracy Under Pressure - Redrawing Power: The Supreme Court and the Future of Executive Authority
DESCRIPTION:s the Supreme Court revisits and revises the limits of presidential and administrative power\, its decisions are reshaping the scope of executive authority. A conservative majority has signaled openness to the “unitary executive” theory\, which asserts that the president has sweeping control over the executive branch\, including independent agencies. In recent arguments\, the Court has appeared willing to use this theory to justify the removal of a Federal Trade commissioner\, potentially overturning a 90-year-old precedent. \nUnitary executive theory has also been invoked alongside other arguments for executive expansion by Project 2025\, the controversial set of initiatives that calls for rolling back key regulatory and civil rights protections\, including workplace discrimination oversight and healthcare rights for transgender people. \nThis panel brings together leading scholars to explore what’s at stake: the future of federal agencies\, the balance of powers\, and the trajectory of American democracy. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Public Policy Program\, the Political Science Department at Hunter College\, and the LGBTQ Policy Center. It is made possible in part by the generous support of the New York City Council and the CUNY LGBTQ Consortium.

SUMMARY:Building Racial Equity: Foundations – Virtual
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about our ticket prices here: https://bit.ly/RFTicketInfo \nIn a moment unlike any we have faced as a global community\, Race Forward believes that Racial Justice is more important than ever. In order to embed Racial Equity into all of our day to day operations as well as our responses in this moment we must continue to hold fast to a commitment that enables us to learn\, grow and practice racial equity work together. \nAs the world continues to adapt to threats against democracy\, we will continue to offer virtual learning spaces that center on normalizing\, organizing\, and operationalizing racial equity into our work at every intersection. \nThe Virtual Building Racial Equity series\, developed by Race Forward: The Center for Racial Justice Innovation\, is an interactive training for those who wish to sharpen their skills and strategies to address systemic racism and advance racial equity. Unlike “diversity trainings\,” which primarily focus on interpersonal relations and understanding\, these trainings emphasize how to challenge and change institutional racial inequities. \nBuilding Racial Equity: Foundations is the first and “foundational” training of the series. Participants will build on and strengthen racial equity practices for themselves and their organizations and networks. This training will introduce participants to concepts\, frames\, and tools that are essential to a productive racial equity practice. Attending this training is required to participate in subsequent trainings.

SUMMARY:Beyond gas prices: How the Middle East War is affecting Chinese Americans
DESCRIPTION:Global politics moves fast. The U.S.-Iran conflict has opened space for China to assert new diplomatic influence\, and the ripple effects are already being felt in U.S.-China relations. What does this mean for Chinese Americans with cross‑border family\, work\, and community ties? Join us for a discussion with Thomas Krueger\, Senior Policy Advisor on national security and international affairs at Akin Gump\, moderated by Ben Wu\, former U.S. Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce\, on how these global shifts are shaping Chinese American communities and what it means to live “between two worlds” in 2026.On April 1\, the Supreme Court will hear arguments that could redefine what it means to be a U.S. citizen. It is a battle Chinese Americans have fought before. In 1898\, Wong Kim Ark sued for his right to reenter the United States after being denied because of his Chinese ancestry. His Supreme Court victory established birthright citizenship as we know it.
