SUMMARY:King of the Yees\, a play by Lauren Yee
DESCRIPTION:For nearly twenty years\, Larry Yee has been the heart and soul of the Yee Fung Toy Family Association\, a fraternal organization in San Francisco’s iconic Chinatown. But to his daughter Lauren\, a playwright living in New York\, the association is an obsolete relic of a vanishing world. When Larry suddenly disappears\, Lauren sets off on a wild quest to find him\, embarking on a surreal\, magical journey through the history and myths of her own lineage. KING OF THE YEES is a hilarious and heartfelt “kind of true” story by Signature resident artist Lauren Yee\, who turns her incisive comedic eye on what we inherit and what it means to truly be a Yee.

SUMMARY:Chasing Dreams: US-China Music Forum
DESCRIPTION:The US-China Music Forum: Chasing Dreams commemorates the 250th anniversary of the United States; it highlights two major musical works that focus on the sacrifices and contributions of Chinese Americans\, featuring a panel discussion and live operatic excerpts. Join Huang Ruo\, Su Wei and Jindong Cai in a vibrant discussion on how music captures the emotion and power of history\, what the “American Dream” means to them\, and how they envision music and performance illuminating stories that have been neglected. The discussion will be followed with a Q&A and a reception. This is part of the China Now Music Festival\, created to deepen understanding of Chinese culture through orchestral\, operatic\, and chamber music performances. The theme\, Chasing Dreams\, reminds us that the pursuit of dreams is a shared human experience that connects us all.

SUMMARY:Echoes of Arrival: Becoming
DESCRIPTION:Immigration is never a single arrival but an ongoing process of becoming. Beyond legal status and paperwork\, immigrants navigate displacement\, alienation\, adaptation\, and the long\, sometimes complicated journey toward belonging. What did you have to learn to survive and build a life in the United States? What did you choose to carry with you from the culture you came from? What was lost in translation? And what new part of yourself emerged along the way?

SUMMARY:Film Screening "History and Memory: For Akiko and Takashige" by Rea Tajiri
DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker Rea Tajiri blends interviews\, memorabilia\, and a pilgrimage to the camp where her mother was interned\, ruminating on the difficult nature of representing the past – especially a past that exists outside traditional historic accounts. More than simply calling attention to the gaps in the story of the Japanese American internment\, this important film from 1991 raises questions about collective history; questions that prompt Tajiri to daringly re-imagine and re-create what has been stolen and what has been lost. This 30-minute documentary short will be followed by a discussion between the filmmaker and choreographer Benjamin Akio Kimitch.
