SUMMARY:5th Annual CUNY LGBTQI+ Student Conference
DESCRIPTION:This year’s theme\, Beyond the Rainbow: Centering Marginalized Voices in the LGBTQI+ Community\, invites us to look past surface-level representation and visibility to engage in deeper\, more meaningful dialogue about equity\, inclusion\, and intersectionality within our community. While the rainbow flag symbolizes unity and pride\, it also challenges us to recognize that not all experiences within the LGBTQI+ spectrum are equally seen or valued. \nBeyond the Rainbow encourages participants to explore the diverse identities and lived experiences that shape our collective story\, including those of transgender and nonbinary individuals\, queer people of color\, people with disabilities\, immigrants\, and others whose voices are often pushed to the margins. Through workshops\, panels\, and storytelling\, we aim to amplify these perspectives\, spark honest conversations\, and strengthen solidarity across differences.

SUMMARY:2026 Asian Americans and STEM Conference: Science in a De-globalizing World
DESCRIPTION:Led by a cross-disciplinary team from Asian American Studies\, Physics\, and Computer Science\, this project examines the contradictory position of Asian American scientists as both celebrated “model minorities” and perceived security threats. By integrating humanities-driven inquiry with scientific history\, the initiative uncovers how U.S. and European imperialism\, racial exclusion\, and global geopolitics have shaped the experiences of these researchers. The work seeks to reclaim the narratives of Asian American scientists\, moving them from passive objects of study to recognized agents of discovery whose contributions have often been erased or obfuscated in standard histories. \nBuilding on an inaugural 2024 conference at Yale that drew over 100 participants\, the project is expanding its reach through a second one-day symposium in collaboration with NYU and CUNY. These events foster critical dialogue on racialization and professionalization within STEM fields across the 20th and 21st centuries. The upcoming symposium continues this mission of addressing the lack of recognition for Asian American technical workers and is open to all individuals interested in the intersection of race\, history\, and scientific production.

SUMMARY:Turang - an Indonesian Film Forum screening
DESCRIPTION:Indonesian Film Forum is proud to present the US East Coast premiere of Bachtiar Siagian’s Turang (1957) – a seminal piece of Indonesian film history\, rediscovered in 2023 after having declared lost for many years. \nTurang centers a love story between Batak Karo villager Tipi and Indonesian freedom fighter Rusli during Indonesia’s fight for independence from Dutch colonial rule. It is a document of Indonesian post-colonial cinema that colors a world beyond the military-centric independence narratives we often see. Turang displays Bachtiar Siagian’s neorealist streak and sincerity in telling the story of the Karo people\, which also reflects his work as a member of LEKRA and the head of the 1964 Afro-Asian Film Festival – a film initiative stemming from the 1955 Afro-Asian conference in Bandung. A majority of Bachtiar Siagian’s films remains unseen to the contemporary audience\, as LEKRA members were exiled or imprisoned after the 1965-66 anti-communist purge and Suharto’s presidency that emerged after.

SUMMARY:AAPI Celebration: On Confluences and Connections by Sangamithra Iyer
DESCRIPTION:Sangamithra Iyer will read from and discuss her debut book\, Governing Bodies: A Memoir\, a Confluence\, a Watershed. Governing Bodies connects family history\, ecological grief\, the lives of animals\, and the memory of water in a lyrical meditation on lineages of nonviolence. In it\, Iyer also wrestles with how we live with the legacy of historical harms and how we address the current moment of multiple worldwide crises. The book sits at the confluence of prose and poetry\, science and art\, and personal and planetary sorrow\, and draws from Iyer’s work at the intersections of engineering\, writing and activism.

SUMMARY:Association for Asian American Studies 2026 Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Our 2026 AAAS gathering in Hawai‘i coincides with a series of anniversaries that present a timely opportunity to consider the promises and limits of Asian American Studies from the belly of the U.S. imperial beast. Here we’re especially thinking about how 2026 marks the semiquincentennial of the United States’ declaration of independence from the British Empire and the birth of its own world historic imperial vision that extended its reach from the Atlantic into the Pacific; the 50th anniversary of the first “landing” that liberated the island of Kaho‘olawe from decades of U.S. Navy live-fire bombing\, a Kanaka Maoli-led effort that helped spark the modern sovereignty movement; and the 80th anniversary of the Great Hawai‘i Sugar Strike\, an island-wide\, interethnic\, working-class shutdown of the plantation industry.

SUMMARY:Sotong & Against This Messy World
DESCRIPTION:This Spring\, GETSEA will host two short films highlighting the challenges to art and expression in Malaysia’s complex political\, legal\, and societal landscape. \nSotong follows four fierce local drag queens who were part of the 2022 Halloween party raided by the authorities. One of them\, Juan\, was arrested for ‘a man dressing up as a woman’. Two years later\, they revisit on the fallout of that night as they continue to perform underground and nurture the Malaysian drag scene in all its beauty\, joy\, and pain. \nAgainst This Messy World is a deeply introspective and visually captivating short documentary that delves into the heart and soul of artistic expression in Malaysia. A personal exploration\, narrated by Malaysian artists\, this documentary takes viewers on an evocative journey to understand the essence and purpose of being an artist in a world marked by chaos and uncertainty and piece together conversations and unfiltered moments in their lives. \nUniversities from across North America will come together to watch the films simultaneously\, then connect via Zoom with the filmmakers for a post-screening discussion. If you are interested in holding a screening at your campus\, please reach out to Chris Hulshof at chulshof@wisc.edu.

SUMMARY:Play - JESA (Final Performances)
DESCRIPTION:JESA by Jeena Yi\, directed by Mei Ann Teo\, is a riotous and heart-wrenching new play that explodes the idea of the “perfect family gathering.” When four estranged Korean American sisters reunite in Orange County to perform their father’s Jesa—a traditional ritual honoring the dead—old wounds erupt\, secrets surface\, and ghosts (literal and emotional) refuse to stay buried. With razor-sharp dialogue\, explosive humor\, and unexpected tenderness\, JESA asks how we honor our ancestors when we can barely stand each other. Come for the sibling brawls and burning shrimp\, stay for the aching truth of what binds us.  \nEnjoy $10 off all performances with discount code: MAYIJESA
