Her work has been published in MQR\, AAWW’s The Margins\, and The Rumpus\, among others. She is the recipient of the 2022–23 Jesmyn Ward Prize from MQR and completed her MFA in Fiction in 2022 at Columbia University\, where she was awarded the Felipe De Alba Fellowship and nominated for the Henfield Prize. This is her first novel.  \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nSally Wen Mao is the acclaimed author of three poetry collections–Oculus which was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and one of Time Magazine’s 100 Must-Read Books of 2019; Mad Honey Symposium\, which named a Top Ten Debut of 2014 in Poets & Writers; and The Kingdom of Surfaces\, a finalist for the 2023 Maya Angelou Book Award. The recipient of two Pushcart Prizes and a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship\, she’s been published in The Paris Review\, Harper Bazaar\, Guenrica\, PEN America\, among others\, with rave reviews of her writing in national outlets such as the New Yorker\, NPR\, and The Washington Post. She currently lives in New York City.

DESCRIPTION:Standing Above the Clouds highlights the movement to protect Mauna Kea through the intergenerational stories of women in three Native Hawaiian families as they stand for the sacred mountain. The film follows teacher and community organizer Pua Case and her two daughters — artist-activists Hāwane Rios and Kapulei Flores — who have been called to stop the telescope since 2010. Their lives quickly become consumed with frontline actions and court proceedings and immersed in ceremonies and cultural practices. As they face opposition and arrests\, they are joined by a community who have dedicated their lives to protecting Mauna Kea.

DESCRIPTION:Graphic novels (memoirs and nonfiction) and comic books are an integral tool in increasing literacy and engagement in the classroom. Through this workshop\, educators will learn the scholarship and research behind the benefits of using comics and graphic novels in the classroom while also gaining access to learning activities and materials to support this work. Participants will learn about the current research on literacy in social studies and how graphic novels improve literacy\, reading comprehension\, and engagement. The workshop ends with a walk-through of various activities and novels that educators can use in their classrooms. Participants will receive a workshop folder filled with classroom activities and lesson extensions at the end of the session.
