DESCRIPTION:Adoptees\, Asian Diaspora\, and the Trauma That Hides in Plain Sight with Kellan\, Kai Ming Holistics (IICT). \nMany adoptees and those in the Asian diaspora carry forms of trauma that don’t always look like trauma — showing up instead as perfectionism\, people-pleasing\, or the pressure to succeed and belong. Beneath this often lies a deeper story of early separation\, cultural disconnection\, and intergenerational survival. \nIn this talk\, Kellan weaves personal experience alongside somatic insight and experiential practice to explore how these layered experiences shape the nervous system\, identity\, and sense of self. With compassion and honesty\, they offer a space to better understand the overlooked body’s role in trauma — and a pathway toward moving beyond survival patterns into greater authenticity\, self acceptance\, and true belonging. \nKellan is a queer\, neurodivergent\, transracial adoptee from China. They work integratively with adoptees and queer clients to address deep-rooted trauma beyond the reach of traditional talk therapy\, through their practice\, Kai Ming Holistics (IICT).

SUMMARY:Tuvergen Band - Mongolian Folk Fusion
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Tuvergen Band and the distinctive musical and cultural traditions of Mongolia\, with its deep connection to the natural world. Come and hear for yourself how the country’s traditional music reflects the sounds of wind\, water\, animals\, and the expansive grasslands of the steppe. At the heart of this tradition is throat singing (khöömii)\, a mesmerizing vocal technique in which a single voice produces multiple tones at once\, echoing the layered harmonies of the surrounding environment. \nTuvergen Band features Tamir Hargana\, an award-winning throat singer and multi-instrumentalist; Naizal Hargana\, a master of the morin khuur who was principal and leading soloist of the Inner Mongolian Youth Choir’s Morin Khuur Ensemble and is known for bridging Mongolian and Western styles; and Brent Roman\, an ethnomusicologist and former Cirque du Soleil performer whose global drum kit and didgeridoo add rich texture to the group’s “modern nomadic music”. \nThroughout the program\, audiences will have the chance to try basic vocal techniques and rhythm exercises. Flushing Town Hall teaching artist Ling Tang will also join the band\, improvising with their music while demonstrating essential Inner Mongolian dance movements such as horse-riding steps and the use of unique props like chopsticks and wine cups. Together\, they will lead everyone in a lively grassland-inspired music and dance finale\, a joyful dance party. This event was originally offered as part of FTH’s 2026 Lunar New Year programming.

DESCRIPTION:311/911 on Adolescent Mental Health with Dr. Angela Kang. \nDr. Angela Kang will present “The 311 and 911 of Adolescent Mental Health.” This informative session will provide an overview of the foundations of adolescent mental health\, including common emotional and behavioral challenges faced by teens today. Dr. Kang will also highlight key warning signs that may indicate more serious or emergent concerns\, helping caregivers and community members better understand when and how to seek support. Attendees will gain practical insights\, tools\, and resources to respond effectively to both everyday (“311”) situations and urgent (“911”) mental health needs in adolescents. \nAngela Kang is a licensed psychologist in NY and NJ. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and her PhD from Fordham University. She has over 17 years of experience working with children\, adolescents\, adults\, and couples. Currently\, she sees adults and couples in her private practice and specializes in working with Asian Americans struggling with acculturation\, intergenerational family conflict\, and cultural stressors. She previously served as a Program Director of the Montefiore School Health Program where she worked with children\, adolescents\, and families in a school-based clinic for over 10 years. She also serves as a mental health consultant and adjunct instructor for Fordham University and provides workshops for school staff and students in the NYC area.

DESCRIPTION:Join The Asian American Education Project for a live\, virtual workshop that will help educators gain a comprehensive understanding of the benefits of incorporating graphic novels into their classrooms\, with a particular emphasis on APIDA (Asian Pacific Islander Desi American) graphic novels. Participants will enhance their knowledge of these graphic novels and discover how they can support a diverse range of learners. Educators will also receive access to an online copy of the newly released graphic novel Fighting to Belong vol.1 and its companion curriculum guide\, which examines the history of APIDA communities in the United States. Through this workshop\, educators will learn how to understand\, teach\, and integrate these resources into their curriculum to enrich their students’ learning experiences.

SUMMARY:Segmented markets\, chokepoints\, and the limits of liberalisation: Rethinking the Philippine rice economy
DESCRIPTION:Despite being a nation of rice eaters\, the Philippines’ smallholder rice economy remains structurally fragile. This talk asks why a country with a long history of rice crises continues to struggle to sustain domestic production\, and advances two related claims. \nFirst\, importation has long served as the Philippine state’s principal instrument for managing rice crises\, but this recurrent reliance has displaced rather than resolved the challenge of sustaining domestic production reform. \nSecond\, this pattern cannot be understood by assuming a unified national rice market. The Philippine rice economy is better seen as a segmented field in which traders\, millers\, creditors\, and other intermediaries control chokepoints that shape price formation\, timing of sale\, and the distribution of value. Dominant policy approaches have framed rice competitiveness too narrowly: they identify low yields\, high production costs\, and high gross marketing margins\, but leave insufficient room for analysing the relations that systematically weaken farmers’ bargaining position in the market. Supporting rural well-being requires more than improved seeds or machines; it requires policy attention to mobility\, bargaining power\, reciprocity\, and the social infrastructures of hanapbuhay.

The program will also recognize student contributors to LaGuardia’s Asian American Voices journal. \nA moderated discussion with invited elected officials and activists (to be announced) moderated by Hsu Pyae Pyae Moe\, SGA Executive Treasurer\, and Kenny Lin\, VP of Service for Phi Theta Kappa\, will take place from 3–4 p.m. in the Little Theater\, followed by a Q&A session. \nA reception in the Skylight Area next to the Little Theater will follow from 4-5 p.m.\, featuring cuisines from Myanmar\, Bangladesh\, and Nepal.
