SUMMARY:Race and Space: How Laws Create and Impact Asian Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Since its origins\, America has existed as a racially segregated country. For most of its history\, the law has been used to create and enforce this segregation. With the Reconstruction era’s 13th\, 14th\, and 15th Amendments\, or as historian Eric Foner calls it\, the “second founding\,” the U.S. abolished slavery\, granted citizenship\, and enshrined equality before the law\, at least in principle. And yet\, in fundamental ways\, we still live in a racially segregated country and city. Today\, many Asian New Yorkers shop\, eat\, worship\, reside\, or learn in spaces where they are surrounded by others who look like them. \nThis panel explores several distinct spaces where Asian New Yorkers gather and examines how laws and policies have defined\, developed\, policed\, and shaped these Asian spaces. Featured locations include massage parlors or spas\, New York City’s multiple Chinatowns\, takeout restaurants\, and specialized public high schools. Panelists will discuss how different areas of law such as education law\, criminal law\, immigration law\, and zoning laws impact these places.

The webcast will be held on September 24 at 8 pm EST and will include a question and answer period at the end of the one-hour broadcast. \nOur two speakers will be Gordon Chang\, the distinguished Stanford University history professor and Committee of 100 member\, who has written extensively about the topic\, including “Ghosts of Gold Mountain: The Epic Story of the Chinese Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad (2019)”\, and Jindong Cai\, the Director of the U.S. China Music Institute at Bard\, who is staging an extraordinary oratorio production of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer\, Zhou Long’s “Men of Iron and the Golden Spike” at the Rose Theater\, Jazz at Lincoln Center on October 11. This large-scale symphonic oratorio honors the thousands of Chinese laborers who built the Transcontinental Railroad in the 1860s. The performance will feature an 80-piece orchestra\, a 120-voice chorus\, and six vocal soloists.

DESCRIPTION:Ly Tran was a toddler when she and her family immigrated from a small town along the Mekong river in Vietnam to a two-bedroom railroad apartment in Queens. She grew up in NYC\, sewing ties and cummerbunds on the living room floor with her parents and three brothers to make ends meet. Despite many challenges\, Ly excelled in NYC public schools\, entered Hunter’s Macaulay Honors College\, and earned a 4.0 GPA in her first semester. After this\, her life took a downward turn and she dropped out. While she wrote in her memoir\, House of Sticks\, that she left Hunter\, “never to return again.” She’s back to share her powerful story with our students. \nLy’s life story is full of resilience\, self-discovery\, and love. At this event\, students and faculty will hear more of Tran’s story while also learning more about one another. All are welcome! You do not need to have read the book to join.

SUMMARY:Ideas for Cutting Bureaucratic Hurdles and Getting Things Done in NYC
DESCRIPTION:Mayor Mamdani’s Commission on Government Efficiency (COGE) has put forward five promising ballot proposals to make city government work better\, faster\, and more efficiently. But there are numerous other opportunities to eliminate unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles that slow government down\, increase costs\, and make it harder to get things done in New York—many of which do not require charter changes. Identifying and reducing these frustrating\, costly\, and time-consuming bureaucratic rules and processes will be increasingly important at a time when the city faces massive policy challenges but also growing fiscal constraints. \nThis forum will explore specific opportunities to reduce outdated\, unnecessary\, and redundant bureaucratic hurdles across city government—from approvals at the Department of Buildings and FDNY to contracting\, procurement\, hiring\, and other core government processes. It will be a solutions-focused conversation that delves into rules and practices ripe for improvement and advances practical ideas for how city leaders can make these changes happen. It will discuss the ballot proposals put forward by COGE.
