SUMMARY:Performance - The Table
DESCRIPTION:The Table is a new work of performance that explores insatiability\, grief\, and the body within larger systems. Through immersive\, visceral meditations and a fever dream-like performance language—combining movement\, puppetry\, and everyday objects—the work opens liminal\, shifting worlds where anything can become a portal. Rooted in Pink Fang’s legacy of socially engaged\, interdisciplinary performance\, the work centers collective experience\, relational exchange\, and the body as a site of inquiry. Both poetic and unsettling\, it examines the forces that drive desire and dissatisfaction\, asking a central question: What is enough?

SUMMARY:2026 Korea on Screen: The Final Semester(3학년 2학기)
DESCRIPTION:The Korean Cultural Center New York proudly presents The Final Semester as part of its Korea on Screen series—a year-long screening series celebrating the depth and diversity of Korean cinema. Through feature films\, documentaries\, short films\, and independent productions\, the series aims to broaden access to and appreciation of Korean cinema in New York City. \nA quietly powerful portrait of youth and labor\, The Final Semester follows Chang-woo\, a vocational high school student navigating the pressures of his first workplace internship—balancing physical hardship\, psychological strain\, and the quiet indignities of a system that measures young people by their utility. Director Lee Ran-hee brings a clear-eyed sensitivity to the realities faced by working-class youth in contemporary Korea\, grounding the film in the textures of everyday labor and the small dignities that make it bearable.

SUMMARY:Geopolitics\, Identity\, and the Fight for Civil Rights
DESCRIPTION:The third webinar in this series examines the downstream effects of U.S. foreign policy through both a historical and contemporary lens. Drawing parallels across time\, the conversation will explore how periods of international strain have influenced domestic policies and legal interpretations—from immigration restrictions to citizenship rights—and how these dynamics continue to evolve today. \nThe session will explore how narratives of rivalry and suspicion can translate into real-world consequences for communities with heritage ties to countries at the center of geopolitical tension. We will discuss the tradeoffs policymakers face and provide a nuanced understanding of how national priorities intersect with civil liberties.

SUMMARY:10th Orchid Pavilion Gathering Master Class: Hu Wenge in Performance and in Context
DESCRIPTION:In 1930\, China Institute of America invited Mei Lanfang to make his triumphant debut on Broadway. Nearly a century later\, we proudly present a one-time-only opportunity to once again be immersed in the artistry of an internationally acclaimed Peking opera star. \nChina Institute is honored to host Hu Wenge\, a master of the Mei School of Peking opera\, for a special New York performance. As the only male protégé of the late Mei Baojiu\, son of Mei Lanfang\, Hu Wenge is among the very few inheritors in the line of the male dan tradition\, the art of male performers portraying female roles. This landmark event is part of China Institute’s Centennial celebration and is presented in conjunction with the current exhibition “The Dancing Goddess: Mei Lanfang in America” at China Institute Gallery. \nHu will perform in full the iconic drama The Drunken Beauty\, a centerpiece of the opera canon. Through the sophisticated union of movement and music\, he brings to life the distilled essence of the legendary Yang Guifei’s complex emotions as the emperor’s ill-fated favorite. Following the performance\, two distinguished scholars will offer historic insights into the work\, joining Maestro Hu in sharing in-depth reflections on the unique sonic and physical aspects of Sinitic opera. \nThis 10th edition of the Orchid Pavilion Gathering is part of our annual series celebrating artistic exchange\, inspired by the calligrapher Wang Xizhi’s (307–365) historic literati gathering on Mount Kuaiji.
