SUMMARY:Archive of Subterranean Acoustics
DESCRIPTION:Archive of Subterranean Acoustics is an installation and multi-media presentation hosted by Hongbo Cai\, A4’s 2025 Van Lier Fellow in Music Composition. This event marks the culmination of Cai’s fellowship and presents a collection of prototyped artifacts\, simulated spatial environments\, and world-building video installations that together reconstruct the mythical\, subterranean sonic civilization of Agharta. \nAcross millennia and continents\, civilizations share a belief that sound is a tool to measure\, order\, and interpret the universe. This project asks what might it mean to reconstruct the “sound-world” of an ancient city\, and what if the city itself could become a giant instrument shaped by winds\, waters\, labor\, and ritual? \n“Agharta” is borrowed from legend of a mythical city said to lie beneath the Himalayas or Tibet\, on the Earth’s inner surface. Through 3D modeling\, the project attempts to bring this fictional city to life\, designing virtual instruments that blur archaeology\, mechanics\, and invention based on Asian civilizations. The resulting installation invites audiences to inhabit a world where sight serves sound\, instruments are indistinguishable from social order\, and music is not mere art but the very infrastructure of life—an ambiguous and haunting echo of how ancient Asian peoples may have experienced their worlds. \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and The New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellowships. The featured project has been selected as part of the Venice Biennale College – Blend and is sponsored by Flora AI.

SUMMARY:Committee of 100 Asian American Career Ceilings Initiative event
DESCRIPTION:Dear Friends\, \nWe are pleased to invite you to attend the 52nd Committee of 100 Asian American Career Ceilings Initiative event on the “Findings of the Asian American Career Ceilings Survey – Part II” on December 11 at 6 pm ET  that will cover the differences of the results by gender\, age group\, seniority and profession and what the respondents said about what solution(s) they believe should be implemented by companies\, government agencies\, etc. \nThere have been very few surveys done in a professional manner on the issue of Asian American Career Ceilings that seek to capture the opinions and experiences of Asian Americans. Although we conducted an informal survey more than a year ago\, we made the decision to do this formal survey a few months ago. The results are thought provoking and should be valuable to both individuals striving to be successful and for policy makers who are tackling this problem. \nThe survey posed the following questions: \n\nDo you feel that your career success has been impeded in any way because of your ethnicity?\nIf so\, what form of career disadvantage do you feel you have been subjected to (check all that apply):\nWhat do you feel was the cause of the career disadvantage?\nOver the last five years\, on a scale of 0 to 10\, at what level of severity do you feel that you have been subject to Asian American Career Ceilings obstacles  (0 = no impact and 10 = severe impact)?\nDo you feel that the current tensions between the U.S. and China and the Asia hate incidences have had any impact on your career success? 0 to 10 scale (0 = no impact and 10 -= severe impact)\nShare a specific incident that you experienced that you feel is an example of an Asian American Career obstacle.\nShare your view of what solution(s) you believe should be implemented by companies\, government agencies\, etc. to counter Asian American Career obstacles.\n\n  \nSpecial thanks to Jeremy Wu\, a Committee of 100 member\, for his review of the methodologies we used and the technical validity of the results\, \nJeremy was a senior executive and manager with the federal government\, retiring from the Census Bureau after also serving at the Departments of Transportation\, Energy\, and Agriculture. \nHis pioneering Big Data work at the Census Bureau included an online mapping and reporting application that was recognized as a major U.S. statistical innovation at the United Nations in 2009. \nPart II will be held on December 11\, 2025 at  6:00 pm Eastern Time / 5 pm Central Time / 3:00 pm Pacific Time. There is no fee to attend this webcast. Please register for Part II at https://c100-12-11-2025.eventbrite.com \n\nWe hope you will join us. \nBest regards\,\nPeter Young \nChair\, Committee of 100 Asian American Career Ceilings Initiative \nCommittee of 100 Member and Board Member \n  \nPresenter  \nPeter Young  \nChair\, Committee of 100 Asian American Career Ceilings Initiative \nCommittee of 100 Member and Board Member  \n\nPeter Young is CEO and President of Young & Partners\, a corporate strategy and boutique investment banking firm focused on the life science and chemical industries. SUMMARY:The Affordability Crisis Facing NYC's Older Adults
DESCRIPTION:New York’s affordability crisis has finally begun to get the attention it deserves. But few New Yorkers feel the strain more acutely than the city’s 1.3 million older adults. Over the past decade\, the number of older adults living in poverty has surged by 41 percent across the five boroughs\, and today 18.4 percent of New Yorkers age 65+ live below the poverty line. Even more alarming\, nearly one in five older adults report no income from Social Security at all—and many others are working longer out of necessity\, struggling to keep up with rising costs and insufficient retirement savings. \nThis forum will explore how city efforts to tackle New York’s affordability crisis can ensure that older adults’ unique cost-of-living challenges are front and center. Panelists will discuss the bold policy actions and investments needed to strengthen financial security\, stabilize incomes\, expand access to vital supports\, and reverse the alarming rise in older adult poverty.

SUMMARY:Shorts by Lav Diaz\, a Visions/Panawin screening
DESCRIPTION:A “Lav Diaz Short” may sound like an oxymoron for worldwide admirers of the Filipino master writer/director\, better known for his feature films that run as long as 11 hours.  Panawin/Visions presents an opportunity to explore another facet of the artist’s prolific output with this program of his short films\, with running times from 40 minutes to as brief as 2.   As with his more known feature films\, the shorts find him pushing the boundaries of cinematic form while exploring themes of collective trauma\, expiation\, and transcendence. \nThe program includes: Butterflies Have No Memories\, Himala: A Dialectic of Our Times\, Prologue to The Great Desaparecido\, The Boy Who Chose the Earth\, The Day Before the End\, and The Firefly.
