SUMMARY:Cinema Kinare At Film Noir: An Afternoon of South Asian Shorts
DESCRIPTION:Following the event we’ll be regrouping at a bar in Greenpoint for a post screening reception. Details will be shared with those who RSVP with their ticket purchase. There is no additional cost to attend\, let us know if you’d like to come! \nCinema Kinare is a community run project without any institutional support. All funds from tickets will go solely towards covering venue costs. Thank you for your support! \nOur Program \nOur program is threaded through with explorations of masculinity – in its unraveling and its construction\, in its excesses and limitations – as found in friendship\, desire and resistance. \nWe’ll be screening films by four South Asian filmmakers; three of whom are based in and around NYC and will be joining us for a post screening discussion about their craft. \nHeadlining our program is Alexander Farah’s award winning short\, One Day This Kid (2024). The film follows Hamed\, an Afghan Canadian boy\, as he comes into adulthood under the weight of his father’s expectations – confronting fear\, desire and shame\, in search of a self unknown. One Day This Kid premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival\, and won the Grand Jury Prize at South by Southwest 2025 amongst a host of other accolades.

SUMMARY:Shorts by Lav Diaz\, a Visions/Panawin screening
DESCRIPTION:A “Lav Diaz Short” may sound like an oxymoron for worldwide admirers of the Filipino master writer/director\, better known for his feature films that run as long as 11 hours.  Panawin/Visions presents an opportunity to explore another facet of the artist’s prolific output with this program of his short films\, with running times from 40 minutes to as brief as 2.   As with his more known feature films\, the shorts find him pushing the boundaries of cinematic form while exploring themes of collective trauma\, expiation\, and transcendence. \nThe program includes: Butterflies Have No Memories\, Himala: A Dialectic of Our Times\, Prologue to The Great Desaparecido\, The Boy Who Chose the Earth\, The Day Before the End\, and The Firefly.

SUMMARY:24th Annual CUNY IT Conference
DESCRIPTION:Over the years\, the CUNY IT Conference has invited us to explore the challenges and opportunities presented by technology — from “Good Moves in Hard Times\,” to “Opening Access\,” to “Us and It: CUNY in the Age of Generative AI.” Along the way\, we’ve examined how to connect across systems\, collaborate intentionally\, and reimagine the way we teach\, learn\, and work. \nIn 2025\, we turn toward the future. \nWith the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and automation\, how do we move forward—thoughtfully\, strategically\, and ethically—at CUNY? What does it mean to reimagine higher education in an AI-enhanced world\, where intelligent systems are reshaping everything from the classroom to the laboratory to the library? \nWhat opportunities—and responsibilities—do we have as educators\, researchers\, technologists\, and administrators? \n\nHow is AI influencing the way we conduct\, support\, or disseminate research? What new questions are we asking\, and what new methods are emerging?\nHow do we design curricula\, teaching practices\, and learning environments that account for AI as both a tool and a topic?\nWhat does academic integrity look like in an age of machine-generated content and decision-making?\nWhere is AI helping us streamline operations\, improve access\, and reduce friction for students and faculty—and where does it raise new concerns?\nHow do we foster inclusive\, human-centered innovation—and what ethical frameworks should guide our use of AI across disciplines\, departments\, and roles?\nWe invite proposals from across the CUNY community—as well as our colleagues in industry—that explore how AI is reshaping the work we do\, the questions we ask\, and the futures we imagine.\n\nWhether you are testing new tools\, designing new courses\, advancing your research\, refining digital pedagogy\, or developing critical perspectives on emerging technologies\, we hope you’ll join us in this university-wide conversation. \nLet’s move forward—together.

SUMMARY:Impossible Desires: New Directions in Queer Diaspora Studies
DESCRIPTION:The publication of Gayatri Gopinath’s Impossible Desires: Queer Diasporas and South Asian Public Cultures (Duke University Press) in 2005 heralded a new moment in transnational scholarship in gender and sexuality studies. The book theorized queer and feminist cultural practices in the context of South Asian diasporic migration\, and served as a precursor to subsequent scholarship in queer diaspora studies that has radically reshaped the fields of queer and feminist studies in the past two decades. \nWe mark the twentieth anniversary of Impossible Desires by showcasing the work of a new generation of queer diaspora scholars whose work spans South Asia\, the SWANA region\, South Africa\, and the Caribbean. Scholars Kareem Khubchandani\, Suzanne Persard\, Medjuline Shomali\, and Jordache Ellapen will reflect on their own groundbreaking work in light of Gopinath’s book; and artists Al-An deSouza\, Chitra Ganesh\, Shahzia Sikander\, and Felipe Baeza – all of whom have engaged in long-standing dialogues with Gopinath over the years—will reflect on the artist-critic relationship. The evening will conclude with a DJ set by Arshia Fatima Haq\, artist and founder of Discostan.
