Khan\, Mustache is a heartfelt and funny Muslim and South Asian coming of age story set in the mid 90s. The film follows 13 year old Pakistani American Ilyas as he leaves his Islamic private school and enters public school\, navigating family\, faith\, fitting in\, and the awkwardness of growing up\, all while dealing with an inescapable mustache. \n​With Riz Ahmed\, Hasan Minhaj\, and Ramy Youssef among the film’s executive producers\, this is a story that felt especially meaningful for us to bring to Queens and our community. \n​Following the screening\, we’ll host a virtual Q+A with Imran Khan moderated by Jenni Loo and Humza Sohail\, with panelists to be announced closer to the date.

The fourth and final film of eccentric filmmaker Donald Cammell\, best known for his brilliant 1970 debut Performance co-directed with Nic Roeg\, Wild Side was butchered by studio interference\, re-cut and taken away from Cammell who subsequently took his own life. A provocative\, erotic neo-noir starring Christopher Walken in one of his most over-the-top performances\, Wild Side indulges in a rapacious world of power\, sex\, crime and money. Walken’s paranoid Bruno\, a notorious money launderer\, is the subject of an undercover sting operation that pulls in Anne Heche’s banker-turned-high-class prostitute\, who in turn becomes enraptured with Bruno’s elegant wife (Joan Chen). Painstakingly re-cut by Cammell’s widow and longtime editor using Cammell’s notes and a personal cut\, this posthumous director’s cut restores much of its original vision: its humor\, avant garde leanings and non-linear plotting\, along with a new score by Ryuichi Sakamoto. SUMMARY:Artists at the Institute - Gala Porras-Kim
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Gala Porras-Kim discusses recent work that considers how objects in collections are shaped by multiple actors\, some of them non-consenting collaborators: the artists who create them\, the collectors who establish their contexts\, and the curators\, conservators\, and registrars who classify\, preserve\, and present them. The works examine how historical objects are transformed by the classificatory systems applied to them\, tracing shifting taxonomies that position them as historical\, institutional\, natural\, or otherwise. These categories not only shape how objects are understood but also determine which relationships\, histories\, and contexts come to define them. By tracing where different systems of knowledge intersect\, overlap\, and contradict one another\, Porras-Kim’s work considers the multiplicity of stakeholders involved in defining cultural heritage and asks what new perspectives might emerge when the structures used to organize and interpret it are called into question.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this event featuring the editors of Asian Americans in Bilingualism and Bilingual Education: The Long Overdue Voice; Khánh Lê and Zhongfeng Tian. \nAsian Americans in Bilingualism and Bilingual Education centers and amplifies the voices and complex lived experiences of Asian Americans in bilingual education. Drawing from the fields of bilingual education and ethnic studies\, the chapters discuss language ideologies\, anti-racist pedagogies\, language loss and teacher and student experiences to explore how multilingualism is experienced distinctly by Asian Americans.  \nRecognizing the heterogeneity within Asian American communities\, the book highlights underrepresented Asian languages such as Hmong and Khmer and discusses both formal and informal education settings. It showcases a wide range of narratives and qualitative methodologies\, employing critical theoretical frameworks such as AsianCrit\, decoloniality\, intersectionality\, critical refugee studies\, raciolinguistics\, counterhegemonic pedagogies\, humanization and transnationalism. As the first book fully dedicated to Asian American experiences in bilingual education\, it broadens understandings of multilingualism and appeals to researchers\, teacher educators and postgraduate students in applied linguistics\, Asian American studies\, higher education and bilingual education.
