SUMMARY:Artists at the Institute - Gala Porras-Kim
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Gala Porras-Kim discusses recent work that considers how objects in collections are shaped by multiple actors\, some of them non-consenting collaborators: the artists who create them\, the collectors who establish their contexts\, and the curators\, conservators\, and registrars who classify\, preserve\, and present them. The works examine how historical objects are transformed by the classificatory systems applied to them\, tracing shifting taxonomies that position them as historical\, institutional\, natural\, or otherwise. These categories not only shape how objects are understood but also determine which relationships\, histories\, and contexts come to define them. By tracing where different systems of knowledge intersect\, overlap\, and contradict one another\, Porras-Kim’s work considers the multiplicity of stakeholders involved in defining cultural heritage and asks what new perspectives might emerge when the structures used to organize and interpret it are called into question.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this event featuring the editors of Asian Americans in Bilingualism and Bilingual Education: The Long Overdue Voice; Khánh Lê and Zhongfeng Tian. \nAsian Americans in Bilingualism and Bilingual Education centers and amplifies the voices and complex lived experiences of Asian Americans in bilingual education. Drawing from the fields of bilingual education and ethnic studies\, the chapters discuss language ideologies\, anti-racist pedagogies\, language loss and teacher and student experiences to explore how multilingualism is experienced distinctly by Asian Americans.  \nRecognizing the heterogeneity within Asian American communities\, the book highlights underrepresented Asian languages such as Hmong and Khmer and discusses both formal and informal education settings. It showcases a wide range of narratives and qualitative methodologies\, employing critical theoretical frameworks such as AsianCrit\, decoloniality\, intersectionality\, critical refugee studies\, raciolinguistics\, counterhegemonic pedagogies\, humanization and transnationalism. As the first book fully dedicated to Asian American experiences in bilingual education\, it broadens understandings of multilingualism and appeals to researchers\, teacher educators and postgraduate students in applied linguistics\, Asian American studies\, higher education and bilingual education.

DESCRIPTION:On September 18\, 2026\, Maui Public Art Corps and the County of Maui will bring its Lāhainā Think Space pilot project to New York University. Part of the ongoing community engagement process for the future Lāhainā Memorial honoring the 100+ lives lost in the August 8\, 2023 wildfires\, this gathering seeks to share Maui stories while also listening deeply to Hawaiʻi students and diaspora communities whose perspectives are essential to remembrance\, recovery\, and rebuilding. \nThe evening concludes with the Hui Moʻolelo: Lāhainā Film Showcase\, featuring animated short films inspired by intergenerational talk-story recordings with Lāhainā residents and their loved ones. Created by artists from Hawaiʻi and NYC\, the films demonstrate how careful listening can become meaningful public art\, transforming personal stories into shared experiences that preserve cultural memory and inspire conversations about the future of remembrance. SUMMARY:Ideas for Cutting Bureaucratic Hurdles and Getting Things Done in NYC
DESCRIPTION:Mayor Mamdani’s Commission on Government Efficiency (COGE) has put forward five promising ballot proposals to make city government work better\, faster\, and more efficiently. But there are numerous other opportunities to eliminate unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles that slow government down\, increase costs\, and make it harder to get things done in New York—many of which do not require charter changes. Identifying and reducing these frustrating\, costly\, and time-consuming bureaucratic rules and processes will be increasingly important at a time when the city faces massive policy challenges but also growing fiscal constraints. \nThis forum will explore specific opportunities to reduce outdated\, unnecessary\, and redundant bureaucratic hurdles across city government—from approvals at the Department of Buildings and FDNY to contracting\, procurement\, hiring\, and other core government processes. It will be a solutions-focused conversation that delves into rules and practices ripe for improvement and advances practical ideas for how city leaders can make these changes happen. It will discuss the ballot proposals put forward by COGE.

Drawing on both structural analysis of the system and personal experience of isolation and vilification\, he questions if the model can remain viable in the years ahead\, or is it headed for unravelling? The talk is of interest to all who are thinking about the relationship between neoliberalism and authoritarianism.
